Redken Color Extend Magnetics Sulfate-Free Shampoo
Ulta's page says it "gently cleanses color-treated hair" and is sulfate-free. It says the Color Extend Magnetics system "is acidic, which helps to balance the pH levels of the hair and care for the tone and vibrancy of professional color in between salon services". Redken says to use it as a system with the Color Extend Magnetics Conditioner. The ingredient list uses coco-betaine, disodium laureth sulfosuccinate and sodium cocoyl isethionate as cleansers, and includes amodimethicone, arginine, serine and hydrolyzed soy protein.
Pureology Hydrate Shampoo
Pureology Hydrate is a sulfate-free, vegan shampoo for normal to thick, dry, color-treated hair. Ulta's page says it provides "extraordinary color protection" and lists jojoba, green tea and sage as key ingredients.
Key differences
- Main goal. Redken's pitch is pH and color vibrancy. Pureology's is moisture for dry, color-treated hair.
- Vegan claim. Ulta's Pureology page says "100% vegan", and the Redken page we checked doesn't make a vegan claim.
- Both contain fragrance and silicones (amodimethicone).
Verdict: which should you choose?
Choose Redken Color Extend Magnetics if your main concern is keeping salon color looking fresh between appointments and your hair isn't especially dry. Choose Pureology Hydrate if your color-treated hair is also dry and you want a vegan formula.
