Summary taken from the full article below.

SK-II Facial Treatment Essence and Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair are two of the best-known luxury skincare products, and both are built around ferment-derived ingredients. They are different kinds of product, though: one is an essence and the other is a serum.

SK-II Facial Treatment Essence

SK-II says the essence contains "more than 90% PITERA", its "proprietary and naturally-derived ingredient", and makes claims including "firmer, smoother, softer looking skin" and helping "reduce the appearance of dark spots". The ingredient list is just seven ingredients: galactomyces ferment filtrate (PITERA), butylene glycol, pentylene glycol, water, sodium benzoate, methylparaben and sorbic acid. SK-II says to use it twice daily, after cleansing and toning and before serums or moisturizers.

Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair

The retailer page (Ulta) describes Advanced Night Repair as a "face and neck peptide serum" that "visibly reduces signs of aging", with claims of 8-hour antioxidant defense and 72-hour hydration. Bifida ferment lysate is second on the ingredient list, which also includes tripeptide-32, sodium hyaluronate, yeast extract, caffeine and squalane. Directions are to apply it on clean skin before moisturizer, morning and night, using one dropper.

Key differences

  • Step in the routine. The SK-II essence goes on after toner, and the Estée Lauder serum goes on before moisturizer. Each brand's directions place them at different steps, and neither brand says anything about using the two together.
  • Formula length. SK-II's formula is very short. Advanced Night Repair has a long list that includes colorants (Red 4, Yellow 5).
  • Parabens. SK-II's list includes methylparaben. Ulta's Advanced Night Repair page says it's formulated without parabens, mineral oil, synthetic fragrance, phthalates, sulfates and drying alcohol.

Pore-clogging flags

Our pore-clogging checker uses coarse groups based on one published rabbit-ear study (Fulton, 1989). Those results don't reliably predict how a finished product behaves on your skin, so treat this as a prompt to patch test, not a verdict. The checker flags nothing in the SK-II list. In the Advanced Night Repair list it flags oleth-3 (high) and oleth-3 phosphate and oleth-5 (moderate).

Verdict: which should you choose?

Choose SK-II Facial Treatment Essence if you want a minimal, watery essence step built around one hero ingredient. Choose Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair if you want a serum with a broader formula (peptide, hyaluronic acid and antioxidants) that goes under your moisturizer, or if you prefer a paraben-free formula.
